Fattoria San Lorenzo, Il Casolare Rosso, 2017

Located about 20 miles from the Adriatic coast in Montecarotto, Fattoria San Lorenzo was the first certified Biodynamic winery in the Marche. The site has been tended by the same family for three generations and continues to impress me by producing honest, organic, affordable and delicious wines. Today the property is in the hands of Natalino Crognaletti and his mother Vera.
The family’s Il Casolare Rosso bottling is a blend of 50% Sangiovese and 50% Montepulciano, fermented with natural yeast and aged in concrete for three months. In the glass, the wine sings with fresh ripe Bing Cherry notes and hints of red currant. There’s also a slight herbal-ness that pops through and carries along through the finish with fine grain tannins that wrap and warm the palate like an angora sweater. The wine features bright acidity, and at 12.5% alcohol it’s perfect for an expertly made sausage & pepper sandwich.
